Obituary of Garrett Austin Snellgrove

Mr. Garrett Austin Snellgrove, age 83, of Ozark, died Saturday evening, December 8, 2007, in Southeast Alabama Medical Center. Funeral services will be 1:00 P. M. Wednesday, December 12, 2007, from Ozark Baptist Church with Reverend Greg Aman and Reverend Joe Underwood officiating. Interment will follow in Woodlawn Memory Gardens, Holman Funeral Home of Ozark directing. His body will be placed in the Church one hour prior to service time on Wednesday. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5:00 P. M. until 7:00 P. M. Tuesday evening. Mr. Snellgrove was born September 18, 1924 to the late Shellie Austin and Bannie Lee Davis Snellgrove in Midland City, and later moved to the Longstreet Community of Dale County. Following his graduation from Dale County High School in 1943, Mr. Snellgrove served in the United States Army during World War II participating in the Normandy Invasion. He received the World War II Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Army Occupation Medal, Service Medal with Four Bronze Stars, and British Front Line Medal. Mr. Snellgrove was a merchant in Ozark where he and his brother-in-law owned and operated Friendly Loan and Pawn. Later he owned and operated Midtown Laundry and Cleaners, and Central Pawn and Jewelry until his retirement. He was a Mason, a Shriner, a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Disabled American Veterans, the American Legion, and served on the Ozark City Council from 1960 until 1964. Mr. Snellgrove was a member of Ozark Baptist Church. He was revered by his family as a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. In addition to his parents, Mr. Snellgrove was preceded in death by his brothers and sisters, Cleo Horne, Bailey Snellgrove, Doris Edgar, Betty Ruth Bryan, Mary Emma Andrews, Delores Sollie, Louise Snellgrove, and Lucille Snellgrove. Survivors include his wife Mary Slay Snellgrove of Ozark; five daughters and three sons-in-law, Gwen McGarvey of Cowarts, Lynn and Jimmy Riley of Cowarts, Beverly and Billy Kennedy of Ozark, Patti Austin of Fairhope, Sheila and Tommy Busby of Talladega; two sons and daughters-in-law, Austin and Janice Snellgrove of Gulf Breeze, Florida, Steve and Laurie Snellgrove of Fairhope; a special niece, Sue Adams of Headland; ten grandchildren, Todd McGarvey, Suzanne German, Tracie Gulledge, Shaun Canterbury, Adele Austin, Austin Snellgrove, III, Jenny Snellgrove, Davis Snellgrove, Patrick Kennedy, and Philip Kennedy.Eleven great grandchildren and many loving nieces and nephews also survive. Serving as pallbearers will be Todd McGarvey, Patrick Kennedy, Philip Kennedy, Austin Snellgrove, III, Shaun Canterbury, Butch Andrews, Hansel Bateman, and Davis Snellgrove. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Ozark Baptist Church Family Life Center, 282 South Union Avenue, Ozark, Alabama 36360.
