Obituary of Elizabeth Holman Adams

Mrs. Elizabeth Holman Adams, (Mrs. John Q. Adams), of Ozark, died Wednesday, May 12, 2010, at Ozark Health and Rehabilitation Center at the age of 100 years and three months. Funeral services will be 2:00 P. M. Sunday, May 16, 2010, from the First United Methodist Church in Ozark with Reverend Dr. Christian Eckert, Reverend Dr. Jason Thrower, and Reverend Dr. Billy D. Gaither officiating. Interment will follow in Westview Memorial Cemetery, Holman Funeral Home of Ozark directing. Her body will be placed in the church one hour prior to service time on Sunday. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 4:00 P. M. until 5:30 P. M. Saturday afternoon. Mrs. Adams was born February 11, 1910 in Ozark, daughter of the late Jesse DaCosta Holman and Susan Dowling Holman. Mrs. Adams married her childhood sweetheart, John Quincy Adams, on July 30, 1930, and to this union four sons were born, Joseph Holman Adams, John Quincy Adams, III, Jesse Dowling Adams, and James Clinton Adams. In 1927 she graduated from Dale County High School in Ozark and attended Brenau College in Gainesville, Georgia, where she was a member of Delta Delta Delta Sorority. She was a charter member of the Book Club, a lifetime member of the First United Methodist Church of Ozark, and the oldest member at the time of her death. She was active in the Methodist Church in her youth, being a member of Epworth League and a MYF Adult Leader. Later she was a Sunday School Teacher, and one of a group of ladies who made needlepoint alter cushions. During the Korean War she was an active Red Cross Gray Lady, serving at the Camp Rucker post hospital. On the occasion of her 100th birthday she had a resolution in her honor issued by the First United Methodist Church, a proclamation issued by Mayor Billy Blackwell proclaiming February 14 as "Elizabeth Holman Adams Day" in the City of Ozark, and received letters of congratulations from President Barack Obama, Governor Bob Riley, and Congressman Bobby Bright. Mrs. Adams was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, John Quincy Adams; a son, James Clinton Adams; two sisters, Sallie Mae Jackson and Dorothy Patterson; three brothers, Jesse Neil Holman, Eugene Hendrix Holman, and Leslie D. Holman. Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, Joseph H. and Dot Adams of Ozark, Johnny and Gloria Adams of Thomasville, Alabama, Jesse and Ann Adams of Attalla, Alabama; one brother, J. D. Holman of Dothan; seven grandchildren, John Phillip Adams, Bart and Stacy Adams, Sara Elizabeth and Charlie Dawkins, Amanda Adams Dalton, Joseph H. "Jay" Adams, Jr., Susan Adams, and Ellen Adams. Ten great grandchildren also survive. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Vivian B.
