Mr. Tommy Lavender, Dale County Revenue Commissioner, of Ozark, died September 29, 2009 in Dale Medical Center. He was 61. Funeral services will be 2:00 P. M. Friday, October 2, 2009, from Ozark Baptist Church with Reverend Greg Aman and Reverend Harry Circle officiating. Interment will follow in Westview Memorial Cemetery, Holman Funeral Home of Ozark directing. Mr. Lavender's body will be placed in the church one hour prior to service time on Friday. The family will receive friends in the Ozark Baptist Church Sanctuary from 3:00 P. M. until 5:00 P. M. Thursday afternoon. Mr. Lavender was born October 29, 1947 in Ozark, Alabama to the late Thomas Baker Lavender and Myrtle Irene Morrow Lavender. He graduated from Carroll High School in 1966 and from Troy University in 1971 with a Batchelor of Science Degree in Business Administration. He served as a Sergeant in the Army National Guard, the 131st Tank Battalion in Ozark from 1966 to 1972. He was in the custom home building business, Lavender Construction Company, Inc., with his father, the late Thomas Lavender. In 1993 he was appointed as the Dale County Revenue Commissioner. He was certified as an Alabama Tax Administrator in 2002. Prior to becoming Revenue Commissioner he was elected to three terms on the Ozark City Council and served in that capacity until his appointment as Revenue Commissioner. He would have begun his third term on October 1, 2009. He was a member and Deacon of The Ozark Baptist Church, he also served as Church moderator, as a member of the personnel, buildings and grounds, hospitality and ushering committees. He was a member of the Ozark Area Chamber of Commerce, the Association of the United States Army and served on the advisory board of the Ozark Vocational School. Survivors include his wife, Gale Nash Lavender of Ozark; one daughter and son-in-law, Brittany and Travis Godwin of Ozark; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Helen and Harrison Thornhill of Winter Haven, Florida, Debbie and Tony Bludsworth of Ozark; one brother and sister-in-law, Ken and Sherri Lavender of Ozark.
