Lt. Col. Peter B. Venable (USAF Retired), age 90, of Ozark, died Thursday, September 20, 2007, in Ozark Health and Rehabilitation Center. Funeral services will be 1:00 P. M. Saturday, September 22, 2007, from The Main Post Chapel at Fort Rucker, Alabama with The Reverend Lawrence W. Thompson, Rector of St. Matthias Anglican Church, officiating. Interment will follow in Westview Memorial Cemetery in Ozark with full Military Honors to be presented by the United States Air Force, Holman Funeral Home of Ozark directing. Lt. Col. Venable was born January 12, 1917 in Stokes County, North Carolina to the late Susan Ella Beasley Venable and James Martin Venable. He entered the United States Army Air Corps as an Aviation Cadet in 1941, and was Commissioned 2nd Lt. receiving his pilot's wings in 1942. Following the end of the war, he worked as a commercial pilot, flying in the Caribbean area where he got the nickname Pedro. He was recalled to active duty in 1948 and was stationed in Japan, serving as a bomber pilot during the Korean Conflict. He was graduated from Brevard Junior College in North Carolina; The University of Nebraska; received his Masters Degree from Appalachie State University in North Carolina; and earned his Ph.D. at The University of Southern Mississippi in 1968. He taught at Troy State University in Dothan for thirteen years until his retirement in 1982. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by six sisters and four brothers. Lt. Col. Venable was a Lay Reader in the Episcopal Church prior to becoming a member of St. Matthias Anglican Church in Dothan. He was an avid gardener and bee keeper. He was a former member of the Ozark Rotary Club where he was a Paul Harris Fellow. Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Harriet Cilley Venable of Ozark, and one daughter, Sarah Harriet Lowell Venable of St. Michael, Barbados, West Indies.
