LT. COL. (Retired) George W. Harris, age 78, of Ozark, died Saturday, September 8, 2007, at his home following a brief illness. Funeral services will be 10:00 A. M. CST Wednesday, September 12, 2007, from St. John The Evangelist Catholic Church with Reverend Paul Egbe and Reverend John Ross officiating. Interment will be 2:00 CST - 3:00 P. M. EST in Ft. Mitchell National Cemetery with full Military Honors, Holman Funeral Home of Ozark directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5:00 P.M. until 7:00 P. M. Tuesday evening. LT. COL. (Retired) Harris was born April 19, 1929, in Franklin, Pennsylvania to the late Wladzia Sitkoski Harris and Michael George Harris. He graduated from high school in Franklin, Pennsylvania, St. Vincent's Community College in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, and the University of Mississippi where he played football for Ole' Miss. He joined the United States Army in 1955 and served until his retirement in 1975. In 1976 he began his career as ROTC Instructor at Holt High School in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and at Carroll High School from 1977 until 1992 as Senior Army Instructor. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather; an avid Ole' Miss Fan, and enjoyed fishing, hunting, and gardening. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Mary Ann Buck; one brother, Carl Harris; and one granddaughter, Natalie Cincotta. Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Willie Mitchem Harris of Ozark; five daughters and four sons-in-law, Rachel and Darrell Gibbs of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, Leah and Tony Brogden of Peachtree City, Georgia, Lisa and Oscar C. Dunn, Jr. of Ozark, Georgia Harris of Ozark, and Melissa and Mark Cincotta of Alpharetta, Georgia; one son and daughter-in-law, Michael G. and Angie Harris of Ozark, three sisters and one brother-in-law, Sally Marshall of Franklin, Pennsylvania, Helen and Bill Sharp of Franklin, Pennsylvania, and Diana Boal of Polk, Pennsylvania; sister-in-law, Tootie Harris of Franklin, Pennsylvania; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, John and Sonnie Harris of Rimersburg, Pennsylvania, Michael Harris of Clementon, New Jersey, and William and Tina Harris of Orlando, Florida; eight grandchildren, Oscar C. Dunn, III, Kris-Ann Dismukes, Elise Williams, Benjamin Gibbs, Christina Gibbs, Taylor Brogden, Sydney Brogden, Callie Cincotta; three great grandchildren, Oscar C. Dunn, IV, Sara Dunn, and Brodie Dismukes. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in his memory to St. John The Evangelist Catholic Church Memorial Fund, P. O. Box 1008, Ozark, AL 36361.
