Chief Mays served his country for more than 52 years. He enlisted in the Army in 1939 and fought as an infantryman during World War II in the Pacific Theater in the jungles of New Guinea. He served in Korea, Vietnam, and nearly every corner of the world. Mr. Mays served as a Sergeant First Class until his appointment to Warrant Officer in 1966. Of his many awards and decorations, he was most proud of the Combat Infantry Badge (CIB), awarded on September 16, 1944. Following his retirement from the Army in 1976, while serving in the 1st Battalion, 14th Aviation Regiment, he worked as a civilian servant at Fort Sill, Oklahoma until 1992. Mr. Mays and his wife of 54 years moved to Ozark in 1996, where Archie served as a Deacon in Ozark Baptist Church.
