Obituary of Carrie Louise Blackmon Avant

Mrs. Carrie Louise Blackmon Avant, age 97, of Newton, died Wednesday, December 11, 2013, at the home of her daughter in Ozark. Funeral services will be 2:00 P. M. Sunday, December 15, 2013, in the Chapel of Holman Funeral Home in Ozark with Reverend Danny Bynum and Reverend Mike Turner officiating. Interment will follow in Southside Baptist Church Cemetery, Holman Funeral Home of Ozark directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday from 5:00 P. M. until 7:00 P. M. Mrs. Avant was born December 13, 1915 in Dale County to the late Henry Clayton Blackmon and Ida Andelion Joiner Blackmon. She worked for many years on a farm, hoeing peanuts and cotton, and picking cotton. Later, Mrs. Avant was a lunchroom worker and Supervisor at the Newton Elementary School for ten years. She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church in Newton and a member of the Joy Sunday School Class. She loved working in the yard with flowers and in the garden to grow vegetables for family and friends. Mrs. Avant cooked cakes and cookies for family, neighbors, and church activities. She was always helping someone in need --- cooking food to send to the elderly who were not able to cook for themselves. Her four wonderful children, six grandchildren, and six great grandchildren were the joy of her life. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Floyd Avant; one son, Kenneth Avant; two sisters, Hielda Blackmon Hartzog and Evelyn Blackmon; three brothers, Eddie Roy Blackmon, Floyd Spurgon Blackmon, and Ralph Blackmon; and one grandson, William Grimes. Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Margarette and Jimmy Grimes of Ozark, Mildred and Jerry Grimes of Geneva; one son and daughter-in-law, Travis and Ellen Avant of Tupelo, MS; five grandchildren, Jeffrey Grimes of Ozark, Kenny Avant and Johnny Avant of Clewiston, FL, Vanessa Grimes, and Sharon Grimes of Geneva. Six great grandchildren, several great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Southside Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, 902 South Hwy 123, Ozark, Alabama 36360. Service Information
