So sad to hear of Dr. Zumstein's passing. He was a big part of welcoming our family to the community and helping mom transition when we moved to the area. He was a pillar in the community and highly respected in the medical profession. You could not mention his name without it also calling up feelings of professionalism and excellence.
The Ariton and Ozark communities were blessed with his presence for many years and he leaves a void that is impossible to fill.
Rest in Peace.

Dr. Bob was a kind and gentle man who was loved by all who knew him. I got to know and appreciate him as he sang in the church choir I directed back in the 1970's. We will all certainly miss his smile and kind heart.

Dr. Zumstein was Ariton's hero. He took care of everyone and seemed to know more than city doctors. He will be missed in the community. I don't have to tell anyone how great a man he was and made an impression on me. See you again.

Mrs. Mavis, Nancy, Carolyn and Jim:
I am so vey sorry for your loss. Dr. Bob brought me into this world and was a big part of my life growing up in Ariton. I have many fond memories of Dr. Bob, from picking up his car at his office to service it; him drinking those awful tasing "Tab" diet cola's; taking care of all our bumps and bruises on the sidelines during football season; singing in the choir at church and so many other fond memories. I can also remember seeing the lights on at his office many nights at 7 and 8 pm as he would work tirelessly to provide medical care for the people of our town and the surrounding communities. Ariton loved Dr. Zumstein and Dr. Zumstein loved Ariton. Please know that you will be in our thoughts and prayers during this most difficult time. We love ya'll.

My family and I were blessed to have Dr. Bob for our family physician. He was not only our doctor, but a neighbor and friend. We were his neighbors during my early years and I can remember him dropping by our house some nights on his way home from work. My Mom always had a piece of her pound cake saved for him. I can remember being in his home on many occasion and he and his beautiful wife were so wonderful to me. Dr. Bob was one of the best men I have ever known. I will always be thankful for the many times he came to our house to treat my Dad during his illness. He was so wonderful to my Mom. Mom is heartbroken, since we heard the news, she has talked of nothing but all the wonderful things he has done for her and many others in Ariton.
Mrs. Mavis, Nancy, Carolyn and Jim, you are all in and will remain in my thoughts and prayers. We love him and all of you. He will live on in my heart and many, many others. He leaves behind a legacy of what we all should strive to be. He will truly be missed, Kathy Segler McCracken

My family doctor, Robert F Zumstein, from Ariton, Al passed away this week. He was my doctor for about 3/4 of my life. He was the best diagnostician ever. Not just for me but everyone in my family...Mother, Dad, Aunts, uncles, cousins. He was like a part of our family. After my first knee replacement, I got really sick...couldn't walk into work, worn out all the time and it wasn't the knee. I went to five doctors in Dothan..no one knew what it was. Dr Zumstein had already retired one tine but had come back to practice due to another doctor's emergency situation. Mother said to call Dr Z. I did and he saw me immediately...I had blood clots and he knew it simply by the symptoms I gave him. We did the scans and X-rays but I had them. He worked out a plan to treat me and keep me out of the hospital. He made house calls to my Dad. He loved Tennessee Volunteers. We had lots of discussions. I have a lifetime of Dr Z stories. He was a great man and a superb doctor who we were fortunate to have in our midst.

Dr. Bob was a great man and doctor. He was a wonderful teacher too! He gave me a greater love for medicine. I remember one of the first things he told me after I started working for him...”We will never turn anyone away that needs us. Especially the young and elderly because they are the most special patients we have because they need us the most. He had the most pure giving heart, that will be missed by so many and that includes me. I was lucky to work for him when I was in high school, on the sidelines with the Purple Cats and after graduating nursing school. I loved this time of my life and like many others...I loved him.
Ms. Mavis and family be asured that Dr. Bob will live on forever in my heart as well as in others. Thank you for giving of your time with him to care for others. I’m so glad I got to visit with you both not that long ago. What a blessing for me. I’m very sorry for your loss. On behalf of my parents Coach Johnny Sanders (Ariton Purple Cats-early 80’s), Melinda Wilson Sanders(who played piano at your wedding) and myself please accept our heartfelt sorrow for the loss of your beloved husband and father. We love all.

I remember when Dr Zumstein made house calls. My great grandmother was in a wheel chair for the last several years of her life and it was a hardship for her to get to the Dr. Dr Zumstein came to her house several times before she passed away. Needless to say, Dr Zumstein was well loved in our family. He was such a kind and compassionate man. My thoughts and prayers are with the family, and my prayer is that they will be comforted by the wonderful memories they have of him and of the memories of the numerous patients that thought Dr Zumstien was the greatest man they they ever knew. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
