Dearest Earlena,
It was with deep sadness that we read today of Doug's death. It was very difficult to watch the wonderful video album full of pictures of the two of you surrounded by friends and family--and oh! the beautiful grandchildren!
Our memories of the two of you go way back--from the Pi Kap days, to the special day when I awoke from a drugged sleep to find you, Earlena, standing by my hospital bed telling me that our baby boy had arrived, to the day Odie (for that is the name we remember him by) hauled into our house the bookshelves he had made. Please know that, while we were not in touch as we should have been, we kept you in your hearts.
It is so difficult to believe that Doug has passed. We know with certainty , however, that Odie's Father has surrounded you and your precious family with His hedges of love, comfort, and protection, and that the Lord will bless you all of your days.
Much love and continued prayers for your peace and comfort,
John and Dianne Shafer

For the past forty-six years, Doug was our friend and the most wonderful, sweet friend you could ever have. He always had a smile and could turn even the most “dire” situation into an occasion for laughter. He has left us way too soon.
We will never forget you, old friend. We knew how hard you worked to create a family and how much you loved your children and, later, your grandchildren. We appreciated your enthusiasm for Auburn football, your special way of making grits, your love of tennis and your tennis-playing buddies, fun times at Panama City Beach, Atlantic City and other vacations spots. How you toasted our daughters’ weddings! The same way you lived your life– you were all in, wholehearted, generous and loving.
Unfortunately, we will not be at the memorial service on Monday; We will hold you in our hearts for as long as our memories serve us. To Earlena, Natalie, Amy, Scott and other family members, your loss is huge. And while no words can adequately express our sadness, please know that our hearts are with you as you mourn.

I had the pleasure of meeting Doug though his daughters, Amy and Natalie. Doug and Earlene welcomed me with open arms as a college student. Doug was a kind and loving father and friend. He was a great listener and true conversationalist. May God bless the Marshall family as they celebrate Doug’s life and mourn his loss.
With love and prayers,
Cheryl Mitchell and family

Lydia and I send our prayers and deepest heartfelt sympathy on the loss of your loving Doug. It is never easy to accept, but an essential part of life’s journey to heaven’s gate. Do not weep or morn, for his spirit lives with the Lord our God. Dust returns to the ground it came from, and the spirit returns to the God who gave it. Ecclesiastes 12:7
