Mr. Jimmy Calvin Smith (85), a resident of Ozark, died Friday October 1, 2021, in his home surrounded by his family. Funeral services for Mr. Smith will be held 2:00 P.M. Monday, October 4, 2021, from Pleasant Grove Baptist Church with Reverend Mike Whitt and Reverend William Hart officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery, Holman Funeral Home and Cremations of Ozark directing. The family will receive friends in the church Monday from 12:30 P.M. until service time. Jimmy was born August 9, 1936 in Dale County, Alabama to the late Eddie Albert Smith and Ara Wallace Smith. Like many young men, he joined the Army; after which, he was employed by Elmore’s Dime Store. Upon a transfer to Scottsboro, Alabama, he married and had two children. Following a divorce, he and the children returned to Ozark. After his return, he was employed by Civil Service at Fort Rucker, where he worked for 19 years. In 1988, he chose an early retirement to care for his aging mother and aunt. While observing their passion for quilting, he developed that same passion. Over the years, he has made and given away countless quilts which, in turn, has blessed so many. Around 2001, he was employed by William Hardwick to be the “yard man” at the Hardwick residents. Over time, employment transformed into close bonded friendship with the family. He was an active member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. Every summer, he always looked forward to interacting with the kids during recreation at VBS. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Huey Smith; and two sisters, Magdaline Eisenman and Myrlene Thomas. Survivors include one son, Stanley (Amacie) Smith; one daughter, Stacey Evans; four grandchildren, Jay Evans, Dee (Alex) Johnson, McKenzie Flynn, Cooper Smith; five great grandchildren, Lilah Kate Flynn, Brennan Johnson, Connor Johnson, Evie Johnson, Madison Jarrell; one brother-in-law, Wayne Thomas. From his family, a special thanks to the church family and friends that have shown their love and appreciation for Jimmy in their kind words and deeds. Also, a special thanks to Kathy Johnson and the DMC Community Hospice for making an unbearable situation more bearable. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, 1124 County Road 11, Ozark, Alabama 36360.
