SFC Gene Lavergne Brunner “aka Mean Gene” (United States Army, Retired), a resident of Ozark died Friday evening May 20, 2022, in Dale Medical Center. He was 88 years old. Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Thursday, May 26, 2022, from Ozark Baptist Church with Reverend Dr. Eric Fuller officiating, Holman Funeral Home and Cremations of Ozark directing. Full Military Honors will be presented following the service. A Private interment will be in Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church Cemetery at a later date. The family will receive friends Thursday in the church from 9:30 A.M. until service time. Serving as pallbearers will be MSgt Michael D. Metcalf, Joshua David Lassy, Jeffery Johnston, Dr. Shanon Jernigan, Clay Jernigan, Gary Jernigan and Mark Jernigan. SFC Brunner was born August 10, 1933 in Ponchatoula, Louisiana to the late Joseph C. Brunner and Josephine Julia Lavergne Brunner. He served in the United States Army with honors for over 20 years having attained the rank of SFC and received multiple decorations and commendations to include the Bronze Star. Following his retirement from the United States Army, he applied his talents as a Mechanical Maintenance Technician with Michelin Tire Inc. in Dothan and retired in 1995. Gene was an avid gardener and had a passion for fixing just about anything. He was active in his church and the Arguta Community Center. Most of all, Gene loved baseball, following the G. W. Long baseball team and cheering them on as often as he could. Gene is survived by his wife, Jennie Jernigan Brunner of Ozark; his children, Carol Kadish (Eugene) of Cleveland, Ohio, Melba B. Lassy (David) and Russell G. Brunner all of Ozark; grandchildren, Michael Metcalf (Jennifer), Joshua Lassy (Jasmine), Elizabeth Lassy and Logan Brunner; great grandchildren, Cameron, David and Miya Metcalf. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made in his memory to your favorite charity.
