SFC William Luther Bowman, Jr. (United States Army, Retired), a resident of Ozark, died Thursday, July 21, 2022, in Southeast Health Medical Center in Dothan. He was 86 years old. Funeral services for SFC Bowman will be 3:00 P.M. Sunday, August 7, 2022, in the Chapel of Holman Funeral Home in Ozark with Pastor Jeremy Meetze officiating. Interment will follow in Woodlawn Memory Gardens (531 Highway 231 South in Ozark) with full Military Honors, Holman Funeral Home of Ozark directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home in Ozark Sunday from 2:00 P.M. until service time. Serving as pallbearers will be Bobby Enfinger, Ethan Guice, Norman Sleeper, Andy Taylor, David Bates and Ed Weatherman. SFC Bowman was born October 17, 1935 in Cedartown, Georgia to the late William Luther Bowman, Sr. and Emmy Evelyn Evans Bowman. He joined the United States Armed Forces on October 27, 1952. He lived in various places in the United States including Fayetteville, North Carolina, Albany, Georgia and Jacksonville, Alabama. Mr. Bowman served tours overseas in Germany and Okinawa, Japan. He served in the Korean War and Completed two tours in the Vietnam War. He settled in his home of Ozark, Alabama with his family in 1969. Mr. Bowman retired from the United States Army with 22 years of service. His job was a Mess Sergeant in the Army, a career he enjoyed and truly loved. After retirement, William became an active member of both the Disabled American Veterans and the Vietnam Veterans of America. He obtained lifetime membership status in both organizations. In his younger years, he enjoyed hunting and fishing. Later, he enjoyed watching Atlanta Braves Baseball, spending time with his family, anything coconut and his little dog “Lucy”. Mr. Bowman was a member of Camp Ground Baptist Church in Ozark. He was fondly referred to as “Bo” and well known in the community. He enjoyed keeping up with what all the “grands and great-grands” were doing. He dearly loved his family and will be missed. Mr. Bowman was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters, Opal Cox, Ruth Grimes, Bobbie Smith and Mary Rose Carter; two brothers, Jack Bowman and Gary Young; one brother-in-law, Frank Cox. Mr. Bowman is survived by his wife of 64 years, Lucille Cox Bowman of Ozark; one daughter, Nina Segars of Ozark; two sons, Morgan Guice (Debora) of Ozark and Steve Guice (Jan) of Clayhatchee; four grandchildren, Samantha Taylor of Ozark, Amanda Guice of Clayhatchee, Alex Guice of Ozark and Ethan Guice of Atlanta; two great grandchildren, Mackenzie Taylor and Caleb Taylor both of Ozark; two sisters, Kathy Newsome and Roxie Davis; one brother, Duke Williams (Pauline); sister-in-law, Pollie Jones (Bobby); several nieces and nephews. Also surviving is Karen Little who dedicated many years of exceptional care to Bo. Flowers will be accepted or memorial donations may be made in William’s honor to Camp Ground Baptist Church, 3898 Andrews Avenue, Ozark, Alabama 36360. The family would like to thank Dale Medical Center, Dale County Home Health, especially Angelia Laster for her caring and compassion, and Southeast Health in Dothan, especially to Seth and Saege who took such extremely good care of “Bo”.
