Obituary of Pauline Gertrude Sterzenback

Mrs. Pauline Sterzenback, 83, of Ozark, died Friday morning, February 18, 2005, at Ozark Health and Rehabilitation Center. Funeral services will be 2:00 P. M. Monday, February 21, 2005, from St. Johns Catholic Church with Reverend Charles McCabe officiating. Interment will follow in Woodlawn Memory Gardens, Holman Funeral Home of Ozark directing. Rosary will be at 6:00 P. M. on Sunday, February 20, 2005, at Holman Funeral Home in Ozark, with the family receiving friends until 8:00 P. M. Mrs. Sterzenback was born July 17, 1921, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to the late Ida Catherine Panyard Whalen and Thomas F. Whalen. She worked in Washington, DC as a telephone operator where she met and married August J. "Dutch" Sterzenback on November 12, 1945. She traveled extensively with her late husband while he served in the United States Army. The Sterzenbacks made their home in Ozark in 1956, where they were a founding family of St. Johns Catholic Church. She was active in numerous church groups, including serving as the head of the Catholic Youth Religious Education Program. Mrs. Sterzenback worked with Civil Service at Fort Rucker from 1967 until retiring from the Supply and Services Branch of Director of Logistics in 1985. She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, MSgt. (Retired) August J. "Dutch" Sterzenback in November 2004, six sisters, Sister Mary of the Angels, Anna McNierny, Ruth Whalen, Ida Whalen, Grace McCosby, and Frances O'Brien, and two brothers, Thomas F. Whalen, Jr. and John Whalen. Survivors include two daughters, Dianne Davis and her husband, Jack, Dothan, Alabama, and Sue Tzareff and her husband, Paul, Oviedo, Florida, two sons, Mark Sterzenback and his wife, Darlene, Houston, Texas, and Don Sterzenback and his wife, Debi, Panama City Beach, Florida, five grandchildren, Chasen Sterzenback, Lisa and Michael Tzareff, Amanda and Jason Davis, four step-grandchildren, Jason Browne, Nathan Browne, Jon Browne, and Michael Osborn. Numerous nieces, nephews, grand nieces, and grand nephews also survive. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Johns Catholic Church Memorial Fund, P. O. Box 1008, Ozark, Alabama 36361.
