Obituary of Coleman F. Garrett

Mr. Coleman F. Garrett, Sr., age 93, of Ozark, died Tuesday, March 15, 2011, at his home following a brief illness. Funeral services will be 10:30 A. M. Friday, March 18, 2011, from The First United Methodist Church of Ozark with Reverend Dr. Christian Eckert and Reverend Dr. Jason Thrower officiating. Interment will follow in Woodlawn Memory Gardens, Holman Funeral Home of Ozark directing. Mr. Garrett's body will be placed in the church one hour prior to service time on Friday. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday from 5:00 P. M. until 7:00 P. M. Mr. Garrett was born January 31, 1918 in Cullman, Alabama to the late Dr. James Dewitt Garrett and Frances Odessa Daniel Garrett. He and his late wife owned and operated Garrett Furniture Company in Ozark for many years. Mr. Garrett served on the Board of Directors of the Commercial Bank for over 18 years and was its board secretary. He was a World War II Veteran of the U S Navy. He was very involved in community affairs. He served two terms as President of the Ozark Chamber of Commerce, served as Chairman of Ozark Industrial Development Board, and was Chairman of the Dale County Public Building Authority. He was an original member of the Ft. Rucker Advisory Board, which was the forerunner of the Army Aviation Museum Board which raised the initial funds for the present museum facility. One of his greatest accomplishments of which he was very proud, was the design and purchase of Ozark's downtown Christmas decorations Mr. Garrett was always dedicated to his church, The First United Methodist Church. Through the years he served the church in many capacities to include Chairman of the Administrative Board, Chairman of the Parsonage Committee, and served on two building committees. He was a member of the John Wesley Sunday School Class. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 69 years, Frances Balkcom Garrett, and his grandson, Cole Garrett. Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, June Manor and husband, John of Sandestin, Florida, Rose Grant and husband, Jimmy of Dothan; one son and daughter-in-law Frank and Anita Garrett of Ozark; seven grandchildren, Clay Garrett, Wes Grant, Wade Manor, Rosemary McKibben, Gina Grant, Ashley Baker, and Leslie Manor. Ten great grandchildren also survive. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to The Cole Garrett Memorial Scholarship Fund, C/O The First United Methodist Church of Ozark, 167 East Broad Street, Ozark Alabama 36360, or any other fund of choice.
