Obituary of Lewie Frank Snell

Mr. Frank Snell of Skipperville, died Saturday, February 28, 2009, in Dale Medical Center following an extended illness. He was 93 years old. Funeral services will be 10:30 A. M. Monday, March 2, 2009 from Asbury United Methodist Church with Reverend Dr. Rick Patterson and Reverend Jim Fillingim officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery, Holman Funeral Home of Ozark directing. Mr. Snell's body will be placed in the church one hour prior to service time on Monday. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 3:00 P. M. until 5:00 P. M. Sunday afternoon. Mr. Snell was the son of Melona and Mason Snell. He was married to Frances Griggs, Daughter of Nona and Wiley Griggs, for 70 years. To this union was born five children. Mr. Snell farmed for the first eight years of their marriage, and later he delivered propane gas for Clouse Oil Company. He helped Durwood Deloney get his restaurant established with bar-b-que as the main item on the menu. Mr. Snell was the cook for Mr. Nathan Younis in The Chicken House Restaurant, and later worked for the Dale County Commission Road and Bridge Department, operating a road grader. He was elected for two terms as Dale County Commissioner and one term as Chairman of The Dale County Commission. Mr. Snell was very active in Asbury United Methodist Church where he served in many capacities; Counselor of The Methodist Youth Fellowship, Lay Speaker, Choir Member, Delegate to the Annual Conference, and was awarded the Harry Denman Award for Evangelism. Frank was known for his bar-b-que, which he cooked for many churches and schools in Dale County. His neighbors will remember him for sharing the vegetables and fruits from his garden. In addition to his parents, Mr. Snell was preceded in death by his son, Jimmy Snell, three brothers, and one sister. Survivors include his wife of seventy years and eight months, Frances Griggs Snell of Skipperville; two daughters, Judy Trawick of Ozark and Joy Childers of Skipperville; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jerry and Jayne Snell of Toccoa, Georgia, Dr. Joe Snell and Ann of Dothan; nine grandchildren, Franky Jackson and wife Paula of Skipperville, Terry Jackson and wife Brenda of Skipperville, Sherry Dye and husband Jim of Waynesboro, Georgia, Anthony Childers of Dothan, Amarylis Benefield of Ozark, Ashley Childers and wife Cheryl of Skipperville, Elisabeth Wang and husband Scott of Atlanta, Jerry Snell, Jr. and wife Christine, and David Snell and wife Amy of Flowery Branch, Georgia; thirteen great grandchildren, Nathan and Corey Childers, Mason and Marshall Childers, Clay and Robyn Jackson, Margaret Jackson, Jay and Jackson Dye, Trey and Matthew Snell, Caroline and Callie Snell; and one great-great grandchild Audrey Childers. Serving as casket bearers will be his grandsons; Franky Jackson, Terry Jackson, Anthony Childers, Ashley Childers, Jerry Snell, Jr., and David Snell.
