Obituary of James Elton Tomlin

Mr. James Elton "Boots" Tomlin, age 86, of Ariton, died Friday, September 9, 2011, at his home. Funeral services will be 10:00 A.M. Monday, September 12, 2011, from Pleasant Grove Baptist Church with Reverend William Hart and Reverend Timothy Davis officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery, Holman Funeral Home of Ozark directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday, September 11, 2011, from 3:00 P.M. until 5:00 P.M. Mr. Tomlin was born August 5, 1925, in Dale County to the late Eddie Newton Tomlin and Nobie Frances Taylor Tomlin. He served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II, receiving the Purple Heart for wounds received in action. Boots also received the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with the Bronze Star, and Combat Action Ribbon. Following his military service, Mr. Tomlin worked with Civil Service as a Household Goods Inspector, retiring following thirty years of service. In addition to his parents, Mr. Tomlin was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Alice Thelma Carr Tomlin; one sister, Eleanor Frances Tomlin; and five brothers, Don L. Tomlin, Howard Marell "Ted" Tomlin, Roy B. "Mack" Tomlin, Joseph Roscoe Tomlin, and Ed "Sonny" Tomlin, Jr. Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Elton and Linda Tomlin of Ozark, Stanley and Dian "Diz" Tomlin of Dawson, Georgia; one sister, Maxine Tomlin Danner of Ariton; two grandsons, Wes Tomlin of Ozark, and Ben Tomlin and wife Stephan of Alexander City; one great-grandson, Miles James Tomlin of Alexander City. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Flowers will be accepted, or memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
