Obituary of James Merlin Hughes

Mr. James Merlin Hughes, 74, of Skipperville, went home to be with the Lord on Friday evening, November 8, 2013, at his home following an extended illness. Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Monday, November 11, 2013, in Morgan Baptist Church with Reverend Kyle Robertson, Reverend Darryl Hammonds, and Reverend Jean Watson officiating. Interment will follow in Bersheba Cemetery, Holman Funeral Home directing. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 3:00 P.M. until 5:00 P.M. Sunday afternoon. Mr. Hughes was born June 14, 1939, in Skipperville to the late Frances Jewell Mathison and Carey Clayton Hughes. He was retired from the United States Air Force and the U. S. Postal Service. He was a Deacon of Morgan Baptist Church and sang in the Choir. He also enjoyed the fellowship of Ozark Hardee’s Breakfast Bunch. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Wanda Snell Hughes; brother, Eldridge C. Hughes; and sisters, Betty H. Castleberry and Jeanelle H. Ham. He is survived by his two daughters and their husbands: Angie Hughes Stinson (Keith), Shorterville; Frances Hughes Barnwell (James), Dothan, AL. Four grandsons; Garrett and Dustin Stinson; Matthew and Mitchell Barnwell. A greatly loved fiancée; Gloria Peters, Blue Springs, AL. He is also survived by five sisters: Margaret H. Watson, Skipperville; Shirley H. Woodie (Ed), Ozark; Gwen H. Harju (Mel), Benton, LA; Linda Gail Rowe (Jesse) and Dinah Curtin (John), Jacksonville, FL.
