Obituary of Raymond Thomas Barrs

Mr. Raymond Thomas Barrs, age 85, of Newton, died Tuesday, July 1, 2014, at his home.
Funeral services will be 10:00 A. M. Saturday, July 5, 2014, from Newton Baptist Church with Reverend Benjamin Johnson officiating. Interment will follow in Newton City Cemetery, Holman Funeral Home of Ozark directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday from 5:00 P. M. until 7:00 P. M.
Mr. Barrs was born June 19, 1929 in Birmingham, Alabama to the late Thomas Edward Barrs and Alice Maude Jones Barrs. He was a graduate of Hewitt High School in Trussville, Alabama, attended the University of Alabama, and in 1957 he graduated from Southeastern Bible College. He served in the United States Army and later worked as a Computer Analyst with the United States Department of The Treasury at Fort Rucker. He was a member of Newton Baptist Church. Mr. Barrs was a faithful member of the Gideons International for many years. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Stephen Barrs; and one son-in-law, Craig Bonds.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Marian Cairns Barrs of Newton;
six children, Thomas H. Barrs of Atlanta, Jonathan H. Barrs and spouse, Lisa of Gulf Breeze, Heather Chapman and spouse, Fleetwood of Dothan, Kenneth Barrs of California, James L. Barrs and spouse, Rebecca of Newton, and Hope E. Bonds of Ozark;
and one brother, James D. Barrs of Montgomery.
Thirteen grandchildren also survive.
