Obituary of James Jackson Tate

Jack, as he was known, was the youngest child of Professor and Mrs. A. W. Tate, founder of the Baptist Collegiate Institute in Newton in 1898. Educated at Auburn University, he started his career in aviation as a tool and dye maker with Martin Aircraft in Baltimore, Maryland. During World War II he worked extensively on modifications to the B26 Bomber. After the war he was employed with L. B. Smith Company in converting World War II aircraft into commercial use planes. He was first married to Margaret Fallin of Baltimore, and had a son, James. Later he was employed by Eastern Airlines in Miami as a maintenance Engineer. He later married Ann Bottaglia and had a daughter, Linda, and a son, Walter. He retired from Eastern Airlines in 1977 and moved to Newton. He built his own house at 313 College Street, where he lived with Ann until her death in 1991. While living Newton he raised thoroughbred cattle and operated a jewelry business from his home. He was a fisherman par excellence and a skilled worker in many crafts. He was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution, #139637. Service Information
