Major Clarence L. Heiss (United States Army Retired), age 83, of Ozark, died Friday morning, February 6, 2009, at his home following an extended illness. Funeral services will be 3:30 P. M. Sunday, February 8, 2009 in the Chapel of Holman Funeral Home in Ozark with Reverend Greg Aman officiating. Interment will follow in Woodlawn Memory Gardens with full Military Honors, Holman Funeral Home of Ozark directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 1:30 P. M. Sunday until service time. Mr. Heiss was born June 10, 1925, in Minerva, Kentucky to the late Clarence Madison Heiss and Mary Wallingford Heiss. He entered the Navy following high school and served for seven years during World War II. Following his Navy service, he entered Eastern Kentucky University where he received his regular United States Army Commission. He served for 23 years, retiring in 1966 at Fort Huachuca, Arizona. He then moved to Ozark where he worked with Paige Aircraft Maintenance at Fort Rucker. He received his Masters Degree from Troy University and later instructed at Alabama Aviation School. He was Chief Pilot for Jordan Industries, then for A. J. Aeromotive and Holman Transportation Systems. He operated the fixed base operation, Ozark Air Service at Blackwell Field, until his retirement. He was a member of Ozark Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Sara Catherine Norsworthy, his sister, Virginia H. Clem, and his brother, James T. Heiss. Survivors include his wife, Neita Belcher Heiss of Ozark; one daughter and son-in-law, Marilyn and Jack Norsworthy of Glenwood, Alabama; one son, John Heiss of Ozark; one stepdaughter, Kelly and Rick Nudelman of Cumming, Georgia; two stepsons, Brad and Lori Williams of Hondo, Texas, Wesley and Claudia Williams of Lockport, Illinois; one sister and brother-in-law, Alice and Fred Hutton of Brandon, Florida; one sister-in-law, Iris B. Heiss of Ludlow, Kentucky; seven grandchildren, Aimee Keeney and husband David of Greenville, Alabama, Sofia Heiss and Noah Heiss of Orlando, Florida, Stephen Nudelman and wife Dana, Sarah Nudelman of Cumming, Georgia, Alexandra Lord of Lindsay, Ontario, Christi Williams of San Antonio, Texas; three great grandchildren, Sara Helen Keeney, Seth Keeney, and Weston Keeney all of Greenville, Alabama. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Memorials may be made to the Ozark Baptist Church Building Fund, 282 South Union Avenue, Ozark, Alabama 36360; or to Community Hospice of Dale Medical Center, 126 Hospital Avenue, Ozark, Alabama 36360.
