Obituary of George Carroll Dunn

George Carroll Dunn, Sr., beloved husband, father and grandfather, died February 24, 2012 at First Health Hospice House. He was 98 years old. He lived in the Penick Village community in Southern Pines for the past 11 years.
Born in Ozark, AL, he was the son of George Luther Dunn and Corinne Carroll Dunn. An avid artist, he was a 1935 graduate of Auburn University. He remained loyal to his alma mater and the Kappa Sigma fraternity throughout his life. He also studied at the Phoenix Art School in Manhattan during the time Norman Rockwell was an instructor.
He turned down a subsequent scholarship to the Ecole Des Beaux- Arts in Paris to join the U.S. Navy in the years prior to World War II. But, he was called home en route to the Pacific when his father died unexpectedly. This led to a long career as a partner in M.O. Carroll Grocery Company, a family owned and operated wholesale grocery enterprise serving several states.
For close to 40 years, he served on the Board of Directors of the Bank of Ozark, now Wells Fargo, and for one term as its Chairman. He was an early member of the Ozark Kiwanis Club and was at one time its President. For more than 88 years, he remained active in the First United Methodist Church of Ozark. He served on the Board of Stewards both as a member and as its Chairman.
A son, Dr. George Carroll Dunn, Jr., preceded him in death. In addition to his parents, other family members who predeceased him were a sister Marie White Ard and a brother Oscar Carroll Dunn.
Survivors include his wife of 72 years, Elizabeth Tilley Dunn of Ozark and Southern Pines, NC; a daughter Shipley Dunn Jenkins and her husband Dr. Joseph McKendrie Jenkins of Chapel Hill, NC; a granddaughter Dr. Tilley Jenkins Vogel and her husband Dirk Vogel of Seattle, WA; grandson Joseph Campbell Jenkins and his wife Mary McCrory Sebastian Jenkins of Chapel Hill, NC; grandson George McKendrie Jenkins of Washington D.C.; a brother James Carroll Dunn and his wife Peggy Olofsson Dunn of Ozark; a sister in law Dorothy Andrews Dunn of Ozark; many nieces, nephews and great nieces and great nephews.
A memorial service will be held in the chapel of the First United Methodist Church in Ozark, AL on Wednesday, March 7, 2012 at 2 pm. Burial will follow at Westview Memorial Cemetery, Holman Funeral Home of Ozark directing. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the First United Methodist Church of Ozark, 167 E. Broad St., Ozark, AL 36360; First Health Hospice and Palliative Care, 251 Campground Rd., Pinehurst, NC ; Penick Village Thiede Fund for Employee Emergencies; P.O. Box 2001, Southern Pines, NC 28388; or to any charity of choice.
