Obituary of Howard Nelson McNew

Mr. Howard Nelson McNew, (United States Army Retired), age 79, of Ozark, died Monday, January 19, 2009, in Dale Medical Center. Funeral services will be 11:00 A. M. Thursday, January 22, 2009, in the Chapel of Holman Funeral Home in Ozark with Reverend Harry Circle officiating. Interment will follow in Woodlawn Memory Gardens with Full Military Honors and Masonic Rites, Holman Funeral Home of Ozark directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5:00 P. M. until 7:00 P. M. Wednesday evening. Mr. McNew was born May 13, 1929 in Clinchport, Virginia to the late E. J. McNew and Pearlie Stanley McNew. He graduated from high school in Mabe, Virginia and was drafted into the United States Army at age eighteen. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War. Mr. McNew owned and operated Claybank Produce in Ozark for thirty years. He was a member of Ozark Masonic Lodge #908, receiving his 50-year pin in August 2008. He served on the Ozark Planning Commission from November 1976 until November 2000, and received the Distinguished Service Award. Mr. McNew enjoyed sports and was an avid Alabama fan. In addition to his parents, Mr. McNew was preceded in death by three brothers, Willard McNew, Robert McNew, Jr., and Charles McNew. Survivors include his wife of 53 1/2 years, Josephine Lisenby McNew of Ozark; two daughters and one son-in-law, Susan Carol and Lee Harrell, and Sharon Gale Horn all of Cherokee, Alabama; seven grandchildren, Bryan White, Robert White, Charles Schaaf, Larissa Schaaf, Mychal Horn, Lindsey Harrell, and Nicholas Harrell. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Alcazar Shriners, P. O. Box 210279, Montgomery, Alabama 36121.
