Obituary of Aubrey Leon Leatherwood

Mr. Aubrey Leon Leatherwood, age 88, of Ozark, died October 15, 2008, in a Dothan hospital following an extended illness. Funeral services will be 3:00 P. M. Saturday, October 18, 2008, in Asbury United Methodist Church with Reverend Dr. Rick Patterson and Reverend Ray Kelley officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery, Holman Funeral Home of Ozark directing. His body will be placed in the Church one hour prior to service time on Saturday. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5:00 P. M. until 7:00 P. M. Friday evening. Mr. Leatherwood was born November 22, 1919 in Pike County to the late Sally Irene Bludsworth Leatherwood and Thomas Harrison Leatherwood. Aubrey was a member of the Asbury Methodist Church and served his church family and congregation in countless ways. He served as a member of the Dale County Water Board and the Dale County Hospital Board, as an election poll worker and was a member of the Southern Syrup Makers Association. He worked with the Civilian Conservation Corp during the depression and he was a Mason for more than 50 years. Aubrey was a Greyhound bus driver earlier in his career and later worked with Farm Bureau and ALFA Insurance Companies before opening Circle Insurance Company in Ozark with his brother-in-law Durwood Judah. Aubrey was a son, brother, husband, father and grandfather; and friend, witness, leader, example and wise counselor to many. He made the piney woods of Dale County and Ozark his home, but he also traveled the world; and whether at home or away he never met a stranger and he brought good will and joy to all who met him. In addition to his parents, Mr. Leatherwood was preceded in death by his son, Dr. James Stephen Leatherwood, his sister, Verlon Leatherwood, and two brothers, Forrest Leatherwood and Donald Ray Leatherwood. Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Kathleen Judah Leatherwood of Ozark; one daughter, Cheryl Lynne Leatherwood of Ozark; one son and daughter-in-law, Thomas Oscar and Julia Leatherwood of Santa Fe, New Mexico; two sisters, Mattie Earl Bruner of Ozark and Hazel Free of Daytona Beach, Florida; four brothers, Charles Leatherwood of Dublin, Georgia, Kenneth Leatherwood of Conyers, Georgia, Roy Leatherwood of Ozark, and Max Leatherwood of Ozark. He had six grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Keith and Chantele Leatherwood (Havana, Laird, Zaca and Tacia); Kim and Bruce Burley (Connor, Walker and Aubree Kathleen); Todd and Faith Ledford (Mason and Macray); Shanon and John LaSpada (Gianna); Evan Leatherwood and Corrina Leatherwood.
