Please share a memory of Nell to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Mrs. Nell Cherry Baker, 85, ascended to heaven to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, Wednesday, October 26, 2005, in Dale Medical Center after a valiant battle with heart disease. Leaving a wealth of family and friends, the celebration of her extraordinary life will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, October 29, 2005, in the Sanctuary of the Ozark Baptist Church. The Reverend Greg Aman, Reverend Bill Hix, and Reverend Harry Circle will preside. Interment will follow in Woodlawn Memory Gardens in Ozark with Holman Funeral Home of Ozark in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6:00 P. M. until 8:00 P. M. Friday evening, October 28, 2005. Mrs. Baker was born August 21, 1920, in Ariton, but lived her adult life in Ozark. In addition to dedicating her life to her family, she served in various Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) offices for the local and states ladies' auxiliaries. She was active in the National Association of Letter Carriers Auxiliary. Mrs. Baker was a strong supporter of her husband as he climbed the ranks to become Commander of the State of Alabama VFW. She was also actively involved in the Carroll High School Band Parents Association for the combined nine years her children were members of the band. Mrs. Baker was a member of the Ozark Baptist Church for over 46 years, where she taught the Three-Year-Old Class and Vacation Bible School for many years. Before moving to the Ozark Health and Rehabilitation Center (OHR) in February of last year, Mrs. Baker had resided on Newton Avenue and Pine Avenue in Ozark. With her contagious smile and outgoing personality, she quickly became one of the favorites at the OHR. Mrs. Baker always supported Auburn University football by wearing orange and blue attire on game days. To her excitement and joy, Mrs. Baker was selected last spring as Ms. Ozark Health and Rehabilitation for 2005. Her steadfast faith, vibrancy, charm, and beauty were appreciated by all who met her. Preceding Mrs. Baker in death were her parents, Ellie and George Cherry; a daughter, Linda Faye; a sister, Minnie Miller; and two brothers, Glenn and Durward Cherry. Mrs. Baker was a loving wife to her husband of 59 years, Charlie R. Baker, and other survivors include: a daughter and her husband, CW5 Jerry and Diane Standridge of Virginia Beach, Virginia; and a son and daughter-in-law, Robert (Bobby) and Connie Baker of Ozark. The joy of her life was her four grandchildren: Jason Robert Standridge of Chesapeake, Virginia; Kimberly Danielle Baker of Auburn University; and Lauren Michelle and Brian Robert Baker of Ozark. Mrs. Baker is also survived by a sister-in-law, Ouida Baker of Fort Meade, Florida; 24 nieces and nephews; and several special cousins. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made in her memory to the Music Ministries of the Ozark Baptist Church, 282 South Union Avenue, Ozark, Alabama 36360. Service Information
