Obituary of Ab Payne

Mr. Ab Payne, Jr., age 79, of Skipperville, died December 16, 2007, at his home. Funeral services will be graveside at 10:30 A. M. Wednesday, December 19, 2007 in Skipperville Cemetery with Reverend Freddie McCain officiating. Interment will follow in Skipperville Cemetery, Holman Funeral Home of Ozark directing. The family will receive friends at the cemetery following the service. Mr. Payne was born March 30, 1928 to the late Daisy Snell Payne and Abb Payne, Sr. in Skipperville, where he has lived and farmed his entire life. He was a Veteran of the United States Army, and a member of Skipperville United Methodist Church. He was a lover of the land, which produced many great crops of peanuts, corn, cows, and hogs. Mr. Payne was the first farmer in Dale County to be certified to produce two tons of peanuts per acre in 1966. In addition to his parents, Mr. Payne was preceded in death by his wife, and brothers. Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Jeridean M. and James Cooper of Shreveport, Louisiana; two nieces, Fay Payne Riley of Echo and Barbara Bradley of North Carolina; four nephews, Hilton Payne of Skipperville, Mack W. "Buddy" Payne of Lake Placid, Florida, John W. "Jack" Payne of Naples, Florida, James J. Payne, Jr. of Athens, Georgia; Special friends, Carolyn and J. B. Patrick, Martha and Pete Gassett, Manonia and Jessie T. Snell, Myrtice Matthews, Lois Mobley, Glenn German, Edd Atkinson, and Louis Sapp; two loving dogs, Pork and Slick; and his big tom-cat, Morris. The family requests flowers be omitted and memorials be made in his memory to Ozark Dale County Humane Society, P. O. Box 2502, Ozark, Alabama 36361; or to Wiregrass Hospice, P. O.
