My grandmother Buttram was the gentlest, most consistently soft spoken soul I have ever known. She inspired us all (children and grandchildren) to strive for greatness in all that we did by setting "the bar" high as all educators worth their salt know they should. We will miss her in our days that remain here, and look forward to seeing her again one day. . .

My late mother was one of Dr. Buttram's students at Slocomb HIgh School (Polly Strickland). Mom always spoke fondly of Dr. Buttram, and would point out her photo in her yearbook to me and tell me how much influence she'd had on Mom's life. Mom was a a lifelong avid reader, I suspect that Dr. Buttram was responsible for that passion, as well, perhaps, as for the children's short stories that Mom wrote when we were growing up. I never met Dr. Buttram, but she must have been a tremendous educator to have made such an impression that, at the age of 49, "I" remember a woman I never met!
