Obituary of Sara Mac Weed Buttram

Sara Mac Weed Buttram died October 10, 2008. She was retired after a forty-two year career in public education. She was employed by the Ozark, Ariton, Slocomb, and Opelika, Alabama school systems as well as the public school in Port St. Joe, Florida, serving variously as classroom teacher, principal, and resource teacher. She matriculated at Alabama College (now the University of Montevallo) at age sixteen where she earned an AB degree. She earned M.Ed.and Ed.D. degrees at Auburn University. Dr. Buttram is survived by children Emily Claire Buttram (Thomas Lynn) Cheatham, Thomaston, Texas; Dr. James Morrison (Jane Eden) Buttram, Innerarity Island, Florida; Glenda Joyce Buttram (Robert John) Niemiec, St. Paul, Minnesota, eight grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Glenn McMurray Buttram; brother , John Byron Weed; sisters , Margaret Weed Hinson, Clara Weed Attaway and daughter Sara Alice Buttram Moore. She was very close to a niece, Nancy Attaway Fields, Waverly, Alabama. Her devoted care-givers during her later years included Ms. Val Aiken, Ms. Eunice Jones and Ms. Betty Pollard. Dr. Buttram was born to James Norris and Sarah Stella McFadden Weed on Feb 1, 1919 in Ariton (Dale County,) AL. She was a long-time Sunday School teacher at Trinity United Methodist Church in Opelika, Alabama. She was also a member of Delta Kappa Gamma teacher's fraternity which she served in various capacities including president of Alabama's Beta Sigma Chapter. She was one of the founders of the University of Montevallo Alumni Association of Lee County, Alabama, and active in the Retired Teacher's Association. She was a leader in the preservation of the Ariton Universalist Church Building and responsible for it being included in the Alabama Registry of Historic Places. She was an accomplished weaver of intricate pine needle baskets, a lover of all the language arts and a feminist who loyally supported the National Organization for Women. Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Saturday, October 18, 2008, in the Chapel of Holman Funeral Home in Ozark, Alabama. The family will receive friends from 10:00 A.M. Saturday until service time at 11:00 A.M. Interment will follow in Universalist Cemetery in Ariton, Alabama, Holman Funeral Home of Ozark directing. Pallbearers are her grandsons, Michael Buttram, New York City, New York; David Niemiec, St. Paul, Minnesota; sons-in-law Robert Niemiec , St. Paul, Minnesota; Robert T. Moore, Clemson, South Carolina and Tom Cheatham, Thomaston, Texas. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Department of Foreign Languages, University of Montevallo, Montevallo, Alabama 35115.
