Jerry Evans was my big brother. I was born the day before he celebrated his 12th birthday. By the time I was six, Jerry had moved out of the house. By the time I was ten, he had joined the military. Being separated by so many years, we did not “grow up” together.
But I have fond memories of time spent as a child with my big brother. I remember when he took me to Western Auto to buy my first “big kid” bike with my own money. My brother (not my mom or my dad) helped chaperone my third-grade class on a field trip. Once, he even let me tag along on a date with his girlfriend. We went to Indiana Dunes. One of my favorite memories is of Jerry taking our grandparents and me for a ride in his plane. (Pop Hewlett panicked when Jerry let me fly for all of thirty seconds!) But our lives went their own ways and time passed … lots of time.
I am so very grateful for the times we shared in recent years. Getting to know my brother better as we aged was a gift. He was the most easy-going man I have ever known. I never saw him lose his temper. And a kind man. He cared for his neighbor and was always willing to help. I am proud to have had him for a brother.

I am so very sorry that we were unable to attend the viewing and funeral for Jerry. We didn't get the word until it was too late. My husband, Joe, worked with Jerry at Ft. Rucker and knew him for many years. I met Jerry through my husband. He would always speak to us, if we ran into him at the store or wherever. You always felt good after a conversation with Jerry. He truly was a nice person. He will be missed. Suzanne and Joe Hicks

Aww, Jerry was one of my top ten favorite people. He was a joy to ride with on a stand ride because he was one of the very few who understood the true purpose of standardization. Plus I always, always learned something I didn’t know. He was firm but gentle and brought genuine common sense to the check section. He never stopped learning and had a gleam in his eye and a subtle sense of humor. He will be missed…
