Obituary of Joanne Phillips Knight

Mrs. Joanne Phillips Knight, 86, of Blue Springs, died Saturday, October 29, 2016, in Flowers Hospital. Funeral services for Mrs. Knight will be 10:00 A. M. Tuesday, November 1, 2016, from the First United Methodist Church of Ozark with Reverend R. Michael Sigler and Reverend Meghan Kelley officiating. Interment will follow in Salem Baptist Church Cemetery with Holman Funeral Home and Cremations of Ozark directing. The family will receive friends in the Family Life Center of the First United Methodist Church in Ozark Monday evening from 5:00 P. M. until 7:00 P. M. Mrs. Knight was born January 17, 1930 in Troy, Alabama to the late Francis Marion Phillips and Jimmie Kelly Phillips. She received her B. A. Degree from Montevallo University, her M. A. Degree from the University of Alabama, and her Education Specialist Degree from Auburn University. She also did post graduate work at the University of Alabama and the University of Mexico. In 1952 she was awarded a year’s fellowship for historical research in Mexico. Mrs. Knight taught Spanish and History to high school students for thirty-eight years in Lafayette, Tuscaloosa, and Ozark, Alabama. She loved her students and teaching. Mrs. Knight also was an avid traveler who visited all of the United States with the exception of Hawaii, and six continents. She also loved music and reading. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Ozark where she taught Sunday School for many years and served on various church committees. She was also active in Federated Women’s Clubs, many professional groups, friends of the Ozark-Dale County Library, Alpha Delta Kappa and Delta Kappa Gamma Sororities. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Herald Jackson Knight; and a special friend, Mrs. Jannie Glanton. She is survived by her daughter, Martha Kathryn Knight of Milton, Florida; her son, Herald Jackson Knight, Jr. and his wife, Marjorie Land Knight, of Midlothian, Virginia; two granddaughters, Jennifer Claire Knight and Caroline Joyce Knight; a special cousin, Allen Knight; one brother-in-law, Larry Knight. Several nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive. Mrs. Knight has requested that her former students and the John Wesley Fellowship Sunday School Class serve as honorary pallbearers.
