Obituary of Tydle Ray Brackin

Mr. Tydle Ray Brackin, 80, of Ozark, died Monday evening, May 30, 2006, in a Dothan hospital. Funeral services will be 2:00 P. M. Wednesday, June 7, 2006, in the Chapel of Holman Funeral Home in Ozark with Reverend Harry Circle officiating. Interment will follow in Woodlawn Memory Gardens, Holman Funeral Home of Ozark directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5:00 P. M. until 7:00 P. M. Tuesday afternoon. Mr. Brackin was a native of Houston County, the Son of Grady Brackin and Prillie Rae Newton Brackin. He entered the U.S. Navy in 1942 and was involved in numerous sea battles in the Pacific during World War II, including the Battle of Leyte Gulf, while serving as a sonarman aboard the USS Trathan, DD-530. His naval service continued through the Korean War and the Vietnam War, where he served aboard the USS Oriskany, CVA-34, and later was the Leading Chief of VQ-1 Reconnaissance Squadron in Atsugi, Japan. Throughout his Navy career he was respected as a teacher and leader in all his assignments. He retired as a decorated veteran in 1970, and returned to Dothan to pursue a second career in education. After finishing a degree and also teaching at the Alabama Aviation and Technical College in Ozark, he pursued and completed two associate degrees in education at Enterprise State Junior College, and a Bachelor of Science in Education from Troy State University. He taught at Lisenby Elementary School in Ozark, and went on to teach Middle School at D.A. Smith Middle School in Ozark, retiring in 1993. Mr. Brackin was very involved in civic activities, including Scoutmaster of Troop 22 and Camp Alaflo Program Director, Boy Scouts of America, Alabama-Florida Council. Mr. Brackin was a 32nd degree Mason, Scottish Rite Temple, Dothan, AL, and a member of First United Methodist Church of Ozark, AL. He was preceded in death by his wife Annie Ruth Cherry Brackin. Mr. Brackin is survived by his son: Mr. Andre Pierre Brackin, and his wife, Junko Kawanda Brackin of Calhan, Colorado, two brothers: Early Grady Brackin of Marianna, Florida and John D. Brackin of Dothan, step children: Roy Lee and Jan Fuqua of Ozark, Mike and Joane Collins of Clanton, Alabama. Six grandchildren also survive.
